A plain answer
What Is Melanotan 2 and what does it do?
It copies one of your body's hormones. That hormone can darken your skin, cut your hunger, and change your sex drive.
What your skin and brain may feel first
You may hear about a darker tan before anything else. So, what is melanotan 2? It's a man-made form of a hormone in your body. That hormone tells skin cells to make melanin, the brown or black color in skin. Workers at the University of Arizona joined the ends of the lab-made hormone into a ring. The ring made it stronger and harder for your body to break down. The compound is often called MT2 or melanotan ii.
The hormone also acts in your brain. It can cut hunger and raise sex drive. That's why a tanning compound can also cause erections. The compound acts straight on the cells that make skin color. Extra sun isn't needed.
Think of one key that opens several locks. The compound can affect more than your skin. You can't pick only the tan. No health agency has approved it as medicine.
What the names melanotan and MT2 mean
The name melanotan can mean two related lab compounds. Melanotan I became the approved drug afamelanotide. Melanotan II is the compound described here. You'll also see the same compound called MT2, MT-II, or Melanotan 2.
Melanotan 2 has seven joined protein pieces. The listed weight is about 1,024 daltons, a scale used for single molecules [1]. That weight helps scientists tell compounds apart. It doesn't show whether the compound is safe. The first and last pieces join to form a ring. The ring holds the shape and slows how fast your body breaks it down [1].
Early papers hoped a sun-free tan might cut harm from sunlight [4]. That hope never led to an approved tanning drug. All the short names still point to the same unapproved compound.

How MT2 darkens skin without added sun
Sunlight can harm skin before your cells make more color. Melanotan 2 skips that first step. It acts straight on the cells that make skin color. Those cells then make more melanin, the brown or black color in skin [13]. They also make more of the darker brown or black kind [13].
Skin cells keep making color after the compound leaves your blood. A tan can appear within days and last for weeks [14]. Melanotan 2 uses the same color-making process as your own hormone. The lab-made form has a stronger effect.
That doesn't mean the tan guards you from the sun. You can still burn. The study only shows how the color starts and lasts.
Why skin, hunger, and erections change together
MT2 acts on five kinds of cells. One kind makes color in your skin. Other kinds in the brain help control hunger, reward, and sex. A fifth kind affects glands that make oil for skin [1]. Melanotan 2 can act on all of them.
That's why a tanning compound can cut hunger. It's also why erections can start without warning. Tests in mice and rats found changes in food choice and energy use [39]. Results in those animals don't prove the same result in you.
Makers later shaped PT-141 to keep more of the sex effect and less of the skin effect [6]. Melanotan 2 still affects more body functions. You can't shut off hunger or sex while keeping the tan.
Which name means the same thing as MT2
The names can trip you up. Melanotan by itself may mean either of two compounds. Melanotan I is the approved drug afamelanotide. Melanotan II, MT-II, MT2, and melanotan 2 all mean the unapproved compound described here.
Illegal sellers may call it the "Barbie drug" or "sun-tan jabs" [8]. Lab papers may use other formal names [1]. You don't need those names to follow what happened in a study.
When you read "melanotan ii" in a paper, only the spelling has changed. The same is true of "MT2" in an online report. Both names still mean the same compound.
